An Extinction Map and Color Magnitude Diagram for the Globular
نویسنده
چکیده
Differential EV −I variations of up to ∼ 0.2 mag on a scale of arcminutes across NGC 3201 are presented in the form of an extinction map. This map, created by calculating average EV −I values for stars in small subregions of the field with respect to a fiducial region, greatly improves the appearance of the CMD of the cluster. We describe how we implemented this technique in detail with our data for NGC 3201. A comparison between our map and that of the same region extracted from the COBE/DIRBE reddening maps published by Schlegel, Finkbeiner, & Davis (1998) (SFD) displays larger-scale similarities between the two maps as well as smaller-scale features which show up in our map but not in the SFD map. Several methods of determining an EV −I zeropoint to add to our differential extinction map are presented. Isochrone fitting proved to be the most successful one, but it produces an average EV −I for the cluster which is smaller than previously published values by ∼ 1.5σ. Finally, our results seem to support the statement by Arce & Goodman (1999) that the SFD maps overestimate the reddening in regions of high extinction. Variable Stars in the Field of the Globular Cluster Ngc
We report on the discovery and analysis of 14 short-period variable stars in the field of the southern globular cluster NGC 3201, located within roughly two magnitudes on either side of the main-sequence turnoff. 11 of these variable stars are eclipsing binaries, one is an RR Lyrae, and two are thus far unclassified systems. Among the eclipsing binary stars, nine are of the W Ursa Majoris (W UM...
متن کاملThe Large-Scale Extinction Map of the Galactic Bulge from the MACHO Project Photometry
We present a (V −R)-based reddening map of about 43 square degrees of the Galactic bulge/bar. The map is constructed using template image photometry from the MACHO microlensing survey, contains 9717 resolution elements, and is based on (V − R)–color averages of the entire color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) in 4 by 4 arc-minute tiles. The conversion from the observed color to the reddening follows ...

متن کاملMeasuring the Slope of the Dust Extinction Law and the Power Spectrum of Dust Clouds Using Differentially - Reddened Globular Clusters
We present three methods for measuring the slope of the Galactic dust extinction law, R V , and a method for measuring the fine-scale structure of dust clouds in the direction of differentially-reddened globular clusters. We apply these techniques to BV I photometry of stars in the low-latitude Galactic globular cluster NGC 4833 which displays spatially-variable extinction/reddening about a mea...
متن کاملThe Multiplicity of Main Sequence Turnoffs in Globular Clusters
We present color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters for models with self-enrichment and pre-enrichment. The models with self-enrichment turn out to have two or more main sequence turnoff points in the color-magnitude diagram if the fraction of mass lost by the globular cluster under supernova explosions does not exceed 95–97%. The models with pre-enrichment can have only one main sequence ...
